Eat, Play, Sleep

February 21, 2013 by Jess Leave a Comment

That’s pretty much how it goes around here right now: Eat. Play. Sleep. Repeat. Well for Ava that is. I feel like I am still not getting much in the sleep department. She slept better when she was a newborn until 2 months old. Then the numerous wakings throughout the night started. But it wasn’t just always her. She would typically wake up around 2ish and then once I got her fed and back to sleep and of course right when I finally fall asleep…..’scratch scratch’ – there is a dog scratching on our door to go out. Of course my husband miraculously sleeps right through it even though it’s only a matter of a few feet away from his side of the bed.

So I quickly get up, fly across the room to open the door so said dog does not scratch again – heaven forbid the baby gets woken up! I then follow the dog (and by now it’s usually all 3 dogs – once I open that door, the others are like “what? we’re going out?? yay!!!!”) to let them into the backyard. Then I’m standing around in the kitchen waiting for the dogs to come back in. There is always one that lingers outside (usually Angus) and as I’m standing at the door trying to entice him back inside in my loudest most stern whisper (so I don’t wake all the neighbors), he just stands there across the yard staring at me. He knows. He knows I want him to come back in, and he knows I won’t go out there to get him. So he takes his time and sniffs every inch of the grass. I even go grab a bag of dog treats and desperately wave it and shake it at the door fiercely whispering for him to come for a “treat!!!”, throwing all my animal training principals right out. But at 3:00am and severely sleep deprived, there is a certain degree of desperation involved here. He does not come in. So guess what desperation makes me do now? Yes I run out into the backyard in the dark, in my bare feet, hoping that I don’t step in something such as dog or pig poop, and then of course Angus decides now is a great time to bolt right past me back into the house. Luckily I never did step in anything and I did run into the yard in the dark on many occasions.

I get all the dogs quietly back into our room, close the door, settle myself back into bed and close my eyes. 4:00 rolls around way too fast and the baby is awake again. I feed her, get her back to sleep and as I’m falling asleep, something is up with one of the dogs again. Now this mostly only happened on warm nights, there were several nights when they only woke me up once, but there were several nights when they woke me up 3 times. On an average night, twice, and this other time was usually because they wanted a drink. So there I go, following them to the kitchen, making sure to tiptoe past the sleeping pig in the living room. Back to the bedroom and to bed again. Baby is awake around 5:30-6. This time I’m so exhausted I end up letting her sleep beside me in the bed. Then BEEEEEEEP WHAM BLOOOP BEEEEEP – OMG what the heck is that???? Ava and I both jolt ourselves awake to the horrific loud sounds going off in the room. It’s the new ringtone that Steve has his phone’s alarm clock set as. It’s awful. It scared the crap out of both me and the baby. Steve didn’t even wake up. I had to shake him to get him to turn it off. Then the darn thing went off again 30 minutes later. But the best part of it all: when Steve finally wakes up after pressing snooze for an hour and a half. He yawns and says to me…. “I’m SO tired!”. Seriously. It was everything I could do to not throw the pillow on his face.

After a couple months of that, she did start to sleep better throughout the night, then we moved her out of our room into her own room in her crib! A big step. For me that is. She was fine being in her own room, I was the one who had issues with it. I missed having her in our room and I became obsessed with watching her on our video baby monitor (best thing ever!). But I adjusted to it and she started sleeping almost all the way through the night. I admit, it was pretty awesome. But then we all got sick and she was up again several times throughout the night. The dogs however are mostly sleeping all through the night now.

Speaking of sleep, I managed to actually get a pretty good sleep last night. I woke up really early but feeling rather rested. Ava was still sound asleep, Steve was asleep and the dogs were all asleep. I got this great idea of getting up and having some time to myself in a quiet house. Time to actually eat breakfast as usually I’m feeding Ava at the same time so I need to wolf down my cereal or she tries to grab it. The sun was shining, it was a great morning.

I tiptoed out of the room but the dogs were on to me. They dashed out behind me, waking Norman up in the living room. I followed all 4 of them into the kitchen to let them out and….totally forgot that due to the frigid temperature outside that we brought all 6 of the flemish giant rabbits inside – who had taken over our kitchen. What a mess we walked in to! There were rabbit pellets and dumped food dishes all over. The dogs and pig thought this was great – a smorgasbord for breakfast!!! Woohoo!!! So there I was ushering them all out the backdoor as they were trying to hoover as much crap down their throats on the way.

6 Flemish Giant rabbits – all between 15 and 20 pounds each. That’s a lot of rabbit and a lot of mess. Instead of getting my quiet time to eat breakfast, I got quiet time to clean the entire kitchen. Including washing the floor by hand. Oh joy. As soon as I was done, guess what? The baby was awake. Good timing little one.

Ava with the giant bunnies. 5 of them are exactly 1 month older than she is! Also Ava with Norman – he is a big pig now – over 60 pounds and still growing.

My Sweet Valentine

February 14, 2013 by Jess Leave a Comment

It’s funny how fast things change isn’t it?

4 years ago I was living in Vancouver, anxiously waiting to see if I passed round one of the admission requirements for the EATM program.

3 years ago I was living in California, attending the EATM program and newly dating Steve. It was our first Valentine’s day together and we went to a very nice dinner at the Ronald Regan Presidential Museum. (with his brother and one of my roommates!)

2 years ago Steve and I were newly engaged, planning our upcoming wedding and getting ready for graduation in a matter of only a few months.

1 year ago today, I had an ultrasound and we found out we were having a little girl. We stopped at the mall on the way home and picked out her very first outfit.

And today: we have this beautiful, happy, most amazing almost 7 month old. She makes me smile and laugh everyday. What did we do this Valentine’s Day? We went to Target. Yep. How things change.

Isn’t she just precious? I’m so in love.

Valentine’s Day marks another anniversary though, it has now been 14 years since my grandpa passed away. I still remember everything about that day like it was yesterday. After he died my grandma gave me a ring that he had given her. It was the last ring he gave to her before he died. I put it on and never took it off. In fact, it is now my wedding band. I wanted something meaningful and this ring means so much to me and it just “fits” with my engagement ring.

My grandma died exactly 4 years and 10 days before Ava was born. Ava’s middle name is my grandma’s name and how fitting, as I can see my grandma in her sometimes. It’s the neatest thing.

Happy New Year

January 2, 2013 by Jess Leave a Comment

Happy New Year! I took a little hiatus from the blogging world the last 4 months. I have been enjoying my family, loving my little daughter (who is now almost 5 and a half months old!), and working lots too.

I will be back soon with a new post 🙂

I took a chance….

August 31, 2012 by Jess 5 Comments

…and so so thankful I did.

4 years ago:

I was pretty miserable, even though on the outside I seemed happy. I had basically settled on the fact that I might not ever have kids, never be truly in love, and never have a job/ career that I enjoy. Then one August afternoon I heard about the EATM (Exotic Animal Training and Management) program in California. After spending several hours online googling and reading all the info I could find on the program, a new light shone inside of me and I knew that EATM was where I was supposed to go. I finally had something to look forward to, finally something that I really wanted to work towards. After going back to college to get pre-reqs to even be considered for EATM, then visiting the campus in California, I knew with all my heart that I belonged there. To get into the program would be a dream come true for me.

3 years ago:

I got accepted into the EATM program and I moved far away from my home and my family  – to another country all by myself. (but with my 2 best furry friends, Angus & Zoey of course). Ready to start the most amazing adventure of my life.

1 year ago: (well slightly more than a year ago)

I graduated from EATM, married the man of my dreams (who was in my class at EATM), went on an amazing Disneyworld honeymoon, and then moved across the country from California to Chicago. We started our own business and for 2 animal lovers, it is our ultimate dream business. We get to educate people daily about the wonderful world of animals – and we now have over 50 animals of our own! Everyday is an adventure for us and we get to work together and be with our animals – happiness 🙂

and last month, another dream come true – the biggest dream of all: I became a mother.

We have the most beautiful, perfect little girl and we are so happy. Ava was born on July 18th at 8:22am.

It’s amazing what has happened in the last few years, and none of it would have happened if I hadn’t taken a chance.

I know it’s cliche, but I really had no idea how in love I would be with this little baby until I laid eyes on her. I could stare at her for hours and hours, she is just amazing. I fell head over heals in love with her the day she was born and I love her more each day. I didn’t think it was possible but I also fell even more in love with my husband! Just watching how he is with our daughter makes my heart smile. When we were on our way to the hospital the morning she was born, he said to me “I don’t even know how to hold a baby!” and I told him “Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.”

He was more than fine. He is like a natural with her. He was the first person to talk to her and one of the first to hold her (after the Dr who delivered her and the nurse who cleaned her up). In the first 30 minutes of our daughter’s life, I think he took over 300 photos of her. Total proud daddy. I was really sick that entire first day (from the anesthesia) so that day was really a blur for me. Steve was wonderful and looked after our baby that entire day. I don’t think I even changed a diaper until she was 3 days old.

So needless to say things have been busy. Trying to run a business, look after a newborn and all the general care and feeding of over 50 animals that we currently have leaves us very little time for anything else. I do kind of get a little laugh when people say to me “oh you have a newborn – you must be exhausted from lack of sleep!!”. Well actually….I’m getting more sleep now than I did throughout my entire pregnancy. That was one of the worst things for me I found, as I just could not sleep. I had no problem falling asleep but then I was wide awake a couple hours later. I think I’ve watched just about every Lifetime Movie there is – like 3 times each. Now I actually get to sleep for several uninterrupted hours in a row! And there have been several times where Ava has slept for 7 hours straight, a real treat.

I have been terrible at blogging but in all honesty, being on the computer is the last thing I want to do now when I have a spare moment. I’d much rather sit and cuddle my baby or spend time with my husband and our animals. There is always something to do around here, that’s what happens when you live where you work! I’m not complaining though, I love my life and now that our sweet Ava is here, it really is a dream come true for me.

A Hard Lesson to Learn…

July 8, 2012 by Jess 1 Comment

But a very valuable one! The last few days around here have been a little crazy. Definitely not how I imagined the last week and a half of my pregnancy would go.

About 4 days ago just when it hit triple digits temperature wise, our air conditioning decided to quit on us. Lovely. Trying to find someone to come fix it has been a huge chore as everyone is so busy and backed up right now. So here we are 4 days later still with no AC. But wait, it gets better. Yesterday morning we woke up to find we had no water in the house. Not a drop would come out of the taps. Not only does that mean no water to drink, or for the animals, but no washing dishes, no laundry, no showers, and no…flushing the toilets. O.M.G.

We had to go buy gallon jugs of water just so we had drinking water for all of us and each time we needed to flush the toilet, it took 3 gallons that we had to pour into the back tank. Insane!! You don’t realize how bad you take stuff for granted until something like this happens. I have a whole new respect for water, and we have been really good about conserving water too. We have a well and I did learn some good tips on living with a well from my parents who also have one. Don’t waste water is a huge thing!!!! We try to recycle water as much as we can right now anyway and we will be doing this even more now because this happened. (we finally got our water back late this afternoon but it was 2 days without which was horrible!). So learn from our situation and try to conserve water as much as possible – you never realize how valuable it is until there is none.

Today the outside temperature did drop into the 80’s. Still quite warm but a lot better than over 100 which is what it has been. It was so hot in the upstairs in our house we couldn’t sleep up there or really spend any time up there at all. We retreated to the basement where we set up an air mattress and our one fan and that’s where we’ve been sleeping. Of course the dogs, the pig and the coati all came down there to camp out with us as well. The other animals are all fine – they have AC out in their room. They are on their own system separate from the house. We did contemplate going out and sleeping amongst them as well, but the basement has been ok. Well yeah just ok. Sleeping on the floor on a thin air mattress is not my idea of a good time, especially being over 9 months pregnant. With having to get up so many times during the night, it’s very difficult. I literally have to roll off the mattress onto my knees on the floor, then pull myself up using the nearby loveseat. It must look pretty hilarious.

So the craziness aside, the good news is that in only 10 days our little Ava will be making her grand entrance!! We are so excited, and I’m also so excited to not be pregnant anymore. It will be great to be able to bend over properly again, and to not have swollen feet. Of course the best thing of all will be seeing our baby and holding her. I can’t wait.

There are still a lot of things on my to-do list for this week, but her nursery is just about completed. I have a few things to do still but here are some pictures of it so far.

Crib, dresser, bookshelf,  tall shelving unit and carpet are all from Ikea. Change table cover, crib sheet and window valences are from Pottery Barn Kids.

I love this cute carpet!

Her nursery is mostly animal themed with a hint of Star Wars 🙂

So many cute little shoes!

Hand made wipes and burp cloths. Yes we are cloth diapering her as well.

I made the mat in this frame using Disney parks maps and one of the napkins we got when we went to Club 33.

This stuffed macaw is something I got when I was 12 years old from Disney World. Funny how it looks like a Military Macaw and I ended up training a real life one while I was at Eatm.

I made these letters using plain paper mache letters from Hobby Lobby. I covered one side with maps from Disney Parks that I kept. The first A is covered with a map from California Adventure Park in Anaheim – where Steve and I had our first date, and then later we celebrated our engagement there and we also went there the day after we got married. The V is covered with a map from Blizzard Beach in Florida, where we went on our honeymoon and that’s where we chose names for our future children, Ava being one of them. The second A is covered with a map from Animal Kingdom, also in Florida and also where we went on our honeymoon.

The reverse side of the letters are covered with map paper. The first A is covered with a map from California. It shows where we went to school (and met) in Moorpark, where we lived, Disneyland, where we got married (Camarillo) and where we got engaged (Woodland Hills). The V is covered with with a map of BC, Canada – where I’m from. It shows Victoria (where I was born and raised), and Vancouver (where I lived before moving to California). The second A is covered with a map of northern Illinois. It shows the city where Steve was born and raised, and also the town where we live now and where Ava will come home to.

I did a tutorial on how I made the letters here: Homeketeers

Time for Cake!

June 18, 2012 by Jess Leave a Comment

Angus’ birthday was a couple days ago – he is 9 now!!! I still remember the first time I saw him like it was yesterday and the first time I held him. I was instantly in love with him and knew we’d be best friends. He’s my first baby and he’s been through SO much with me over the years. So many heartaches, so many joys and big changes. He was always there to lick my tears away when I was sad, and to celebrate with me when I was excited about something. Oh Angus, I love you so much buddy.

So in celebration of his birthday (and Zoey’s birthday from last month too!), we ordered a little dog cake from this cute store I came across last month near us: Reese’s Barkery. I love this place! They are a dog bakery plus a small pet store but they don’t sell any animals, just supplies. They also don’t sell crap, they just sell the really good stuff, and the couple who own and run it are locals and they are super nice and knowledgeable. (and apparently their daughter also has a pet pig who lives in the house just like Norman! He’s a lot bigger though, over 100 pounds! yikes! and their pig sleeps on the couch too, haha!). I will gladly shop at this store rather than the big box stores! Support the small businesses for sure. One place we never set foot in is Petland. No way jose. That place is awful and sells puppies. We won’t shop at any place that sells puppies (unless they are adopting out rescues) as it’s obvious they come from puppy mills. Terrible. Can’t believe these places are still in business.

Anyway, we got our little cake for the 3 dogs and Norman to share – it’s a carrot cake. That was an easy decision as all of them love carrots. But of course what’s a party without cake for us too? 🙂 I made our favorite cake: Angel Food with a vanilla cheesecake frosting. YUM! Steve and I don’t need an excuse to have Angel Food Cake, and this is one cake that Steve will never turn down. (he isn’t a big one on sweets.)

The dogs and pig all enjoyed their cake very very much, as we did with ours!

The birthday Boy

The party-goer’s! Don’t they look thrilled? It’s so hard to get a group photo of the 4 of them, especially when there is a cake sitting on the nearby ottoman. I can almost read their minds in this photo: (from left to right)  Zoey “You guys are seriously cramping my laying time on this pillow”, Moose “Why am I wearing this hat….oh!! Is that a toy over there on the floor?”, Angus: “Darn it Norman! You’re stepping on my leg!”, Norman “I smell cake! I see cake!”

Angus has given up at this point.

Even baby Twitchy got in on the fun, although he didn’t get to have any cake.

Angel Food, oh yeah!

The other animals got a special treat today too! Fresh picked romaine, spinach and kale from our garden!!! I LOVE having a vegetable garden! I walk Norman over to it every morning and we share a few fresh picked strawberries or peas.:)

In other news this week: Steve and I actually got away for a couple days. Well ok, a couple nights but really only 1 day. We went up to the Wisconsin Dells for a quick getaway. I guess some people refer to these last getaways before their baby is born a “BabyMoon”. LOL. Yes this makes me laugh cause as if you can escape the reality that this baby is almost here. Sure you can go for a getaway but is there a whole LOT of stuff you can do when you’re 8.5 months pregnant? The Dells has loads of waterparks and amusements parks but guess what? I’m 8.5 MONTHS pregnant!!! I can’t go on any of the fun rides or any waterslides, plus once again, I’m pregnant so do I WANT to be running around a waterpark? Whale in the pool – look out!

What we did do was fun though. We got there after dinner on Monday so we walked around the main strip in town where all the touristy stores are and we were basically just typical tourists. It was fun though and all the stores were open late which worked out nice for us. Then we found this place called Wizard Quest and it was amazing! It’s hard to explain but it was like being in an adventure/real life video game/ scavenger hunt kind of thing. We had a blast!! We went late – at 9:30 and stayed until after they closed at 11pm. We enjoyed it so much that we went back the next night too. There was some physical activity involved as well as mental, but as long as one person on your team can do the physical stuff then you’re good.  Yay for Steve as there was no way I was sliding down huge tube slides and crawling through tunnels and stuff.

The next days we rode the Wisconsin Duck Tours. You know those old army vehicles that can go both on land and in water? Yep those. It was fun and we saw a lot of gorgeous scenery. The seating was really cramped though, hardly any leg room at all, I had to sit sideways cause my legs are too long. Then we went mini golfing at an awesome place called “Pirates Cove”. They had 7 different courses I think. It was huge! We did the 2nd most challenging course and I won! Woo! I haven’t won a game in so long. Maybe I should play more mini golf while I’m pregnant!

Later in the afternoon we went back to our hotel (which had both an outdoor and indoor waterpark) and we spent an hour and a half floating around in a double tube through the lazy river in the indoor waterpark. It was amazing! I was just happy that I was able to get myself into the tube so easily as I imagined it would be a lot harder. Steve did have to sort of dump me out of it when we were ready to leave though, lol.

Anyway, we did actually have a fun time away, and we crammed a lot of stuff into our time there. We missed all the animals like crazy though but we were getting regular text updates from our good friends who were house-sitting for us. 🙂

Inside Wizard Quest, Steve being funny

And finally here are a few recent pictures of our little baby coati “Twitch”

Who can resist this cute face?
