A Day With the Birds – November 27, 2006

January 5, 2007 by Jess Leave a Comment

Today we did something really different, and even though I wasn’t thrilled about going at first, it was really cool when we acutally got there! Brent wanted to go take pictures at this bird santuary not far from our house. www.reifelbirdsanctuary.com

Brent called ahead to make sure they were open – cause of our huge snowfall. They were so we bundled up (we were wearing 3 pairs of pants each – plus 3 shirts and a heavy coat. I figured since probably no one else would be trekking through a bird santuary on a Monday morning in the freezing cold and snow over a foot deep – that I wouldn’t run into anyone so why try to make a fashion statement?)

We got to the sanctuary and were given a map by a very friendly lady running the gift shop. We bought 4 bags of bird seed and went out onto the deck of the building and were greeted by all these hungry ducks! Within seconds almost the 4 bags of birdseed was gone and they were all quacking at us and pulling at my pant legs! 😯 I have never been so up close and personal with ducks! They were super friendly – almost like they were pets! I felt sorry for them cause they were still hungry and by now literally hundreds had joined in the flock that was surrounding me. There I was standing in the middle of all these noisy ducks and I couldn’t even move without tripping over one. I made my way back to the giftstore and we bought 20 more bags of seed!! (they were small bags)So back out to the mass amount of ducks waiting for food. This was quite amazing. I knelt down amongst them and they were not afraid of me at all. I was touching them!!! I’ve never touched a duck before! I wanted to pick one up but Brent said not to. LOL 😆 Pigeons were also around and they weren’t shy either. At one point I had three of them sitting on my arm 😮 We gave them a bunch more food then decided to start our trek along the trails. Well, our little group (of a couple hundred!) of duck friends decided to come along. They all waddled behind us. When we stopped, so did they. When we started walking again, they followed us some more. It was hilarious!! They followed us quite a long way, until the trail narrowed and went into a sort of forest setting, then they decided to stay behind. No worries though, we came across many more groups of friendly ducks on our journey. Good thing we still had food left for them. We also came across some cute little chickadees, flittering about in some branches over our heads. The lady from the giftstore gave me special seeds for the chickadees and told me to put it in my hand and they will come eat from it. I didn’t really believe her at first (but then that was before I met all the outgoing ducks). So I poured some seeds into my hand and held it up and to my surprise they started flying closer and then they took turns landing in my hand – taking a seed, then flying off! Wow!! (I tried to do this with the ducks once – put the seeds in my hand – but they practically took my fingers off – and then a couple of them grabbed the seed bag out of my other hand and took off with it!)

The scenery was amazing – it was truly like a winter wonderland. The trues looked gorgeous with all the snow covering them. Everything was white, it was so bright that I had to wear my sunglasses. I seriously have never seen so many wild birds in one place. The temperature dropped again though and suddenly it got very very cold. We made our way back to the main building but the whole journey took us over 2 hours. We stopped along the way to feed a few more groups of ducks and then when we got back to the giftstore building we gave the huge group of ducks the rest of the food we had left. 2 people were walking in as we were leaving and they each had a huge bowl of duck seed. The man was throwing it in handfuls to the eager ducks and inside the bowl the lady was carrying – was a mallard duck! Just sitting there gobbling down all the seed he could from her bowl! 😆 😆

It was a cool experience and one that I have never had before. But I was chilled all day from being out in the cold. I even curled up with Angus on his big pillow in front of the fire when we got home. 😆

Here are some pics of our bird day:

It’s almost Christmas!

December 22, 2006 by Jess Leave a Comment

How can it possibly be Dec 22 today? That means two things: 1) I am so not ready for Christmas and 2) I haven’t written in my blog for 23 days! Shame on me. It just shows how insanely busy this month has been so far. Should I make it my New Year’s Resolution to write in my blog everyday? Nope, cause then it definetly won’t happen. New Year’s Resolutions and I just don’t mix.

Anyway I hope everyone else is ready for Christmas cause I sure am not! It is after 11 am already and I am still sitting on the computer, obviously stalling now. I have to wrap gifts, finish not 1, not 2, but THREE scrapbooking projects that I plan to give as gifts. I also have to bake dog cookies, do other Christmas baking (for people), clean the entire house and get the guest room ready (right now it is a gift stashing room). Oh and the grocery shopping has to be done still for Christmas dinner AND I have 2 projects I need to do to take to my LSS to drop off next week so they can use them as samples for some upcoming classes I will be teaching there. How exciting!!

So lots to do, today will be busy. Brent just went out for a bit to this dyke we have not far from our house. Snowy owls live there and he is hoping to spot one and take some pictures.

Here is Angus and Zoey’s Christmas picture with Santa from this year. Jodi, Dasha and I took them to the mall on Wednesday night for their pet photos with Santa. It was busy and we waited for over an hour in line. NOT FUN. Especially since there was a cat in a carrier right behind us and Zoey was acting like a complete physcho trying to get at it. Quite embarassing, she usually is much better behaved than that. I still don’t understand why she goes so crazy when we see a cat somewhere. She has her own cat at home and could care less about Gracie!

End of the month!

November 30, 2006 by Jess Leave a Comment

It’s November 30th already??? Time sure flies! That means only 25 days left until Christmas, which also means that I didn’t do as I planned several months ago, and completed all my Christmas shopping early. Great, now I will have to battle the insane world of Christmas shoppers.

Have a wicked cold right now that is taking the life out of me. I hear the couch beckoning me back to it….. so I must oblige. Oh the joys of being sick and having to lie on the couch for endless hours watching Regis & Kelly.

Off I go…

My Own Blog – September 21, 2006

September 21, 2006 by Jess Leave a Comment

Wow, my own Blog. Finally I have joined everyone else and started my own Blog. Anyway, today is September 21, 2006. My Grandma’s birthday- Happy Birthday Grandma! It’s also Brent’s mom’s birthday too! Happy Birthday Suzanne! Oh- and isn’t it the first day of fall too? Or is it the last day of summer….. Its funny cause last week it was still scorching hot and now its so much cooler and rainy. The wonderful
Vancouver rainy season has started.

Never keep chocolate in the house. Actually never keep sweets of any kind in the house. I swear they call out to me until I gobble them all up. There is a bag of glossette raisins over on the table and I can hear it whispering my name. They aren’t even that good, yet I still find myself making a detour to the table everytime I get up. Bad chocolate. Is there really such a thing as bad chocolate? Yes, yes there certainly is.

I am so proud of Angus. He (and Zoey too) have been so good for so long now- no accidents in the house. They actually TELL us when they want to go out. What a concept!!!! Angus has a habit though of waking us up in the middle of the night (and it always seems to be me who ends up taking him out). He paces back and forth in the bedroom and then goes and scratches on the door. But at least he is letting us know!!! And its so much better then a year ago when we were in the condo and he’d just lift his leg on the corner of the bathroom door. Yeah, wasn’t that lovely. We have to keep all the doors in our house closed at all times because of Gracie the peeing cat. Yep, that is how I refer to her now: Gracie the peeing cat. She pees on beds. ANY bed. She especially loves ours though. She was doing so well for about a week and we were letting her sleep in the room with us. Then all of a sudden, I find a huge wet spot on the duvet. ERGH! I immediately threw the duvet in the washer. I know, its probably not good to wash the duvet, but it costs like $50 bucks to have it drycleaned. The other couple times I washed it, it was fine, but this time it must have gotten snagged on something in the washer cause there is a hole ripped in it. We didn’t even notice it until we found all these feathers and fluff all over the bed. hehe.

Angus is on the couch right now looking at me. He is so damn cute!! I just love him to bits.

Woohoo- tonight there are new seasons starting for good shows- ER, CSI, Grey’s Anatomy. Well, I don’t really watch Grey’s Anatomy. I wonder why I just said “don’t really”, its more like “not at all”. LOL. I think I’ve watched about 5 minute portions of the show a few times between channel surfing. I’m going to start watching it though, I’ve heard its an awesome show. At least now we have PVR (Like Tivo) so I can tape all kinds of things and watch them later.

I can’t wait for Desperate Housewives to start again- just LOVE that show, LOVE it.

So we went on a trip last weekend up North. A camping trip. Are we crazy??? Yeah, I guess we are kinda. I was so used to the nice weather we had down here that I wasn’t even thinking up North = COLD. I was so used to wearing shorts and tank tops at home, that I even packed capris and t-shirts to take camping. LOL. Its a damn good thing that I also packed lots of sweatshirts and fleeces, cause I was wearing 2 shirts, and 2 fleeces to bed everynight. The first night we woke up to find the tent covered in ice. Yes, ICE. We were sleeping in a friggin IGLOO.

We were also in the middle of nowhere at a campground we found down a logging road. It was beautiful though- right on

Cariboo
Lake. I never even heard of

Cariboo
Lake before. We were 30 minutes down the logging road from the nearest town. If you can even call it a town. It had a population of 300. Town of Likely- consisted of one general store, and a pub located inside of the Likely Hilton Hotel. Certainly unlike any other Hilton I’ve seen. See the pic below.

Ok, gonna sign off for the moment. Stay tuned for more stories of our Great Northern Camping Trip!!!

Those damn glosette raisins are chirping again……
