Jess and Nicole’s Seattle Adventure…

November 4, 2007 by Jess Leave a Comment

CKC Seattle was a lot of fun!! Nicole is absolutely hilarious, I had so much fun traveling with her.

We started our journey Thursday morning at 4am when she arrived at my house to pick me up. Both of us had each only had 3 hours of sleep! We made it through the border super quick (there were no other cars there – first time I’ve never had to wait in line to get through). We arrived really early at our hotel – just after 6am! Luckily they let us check in so we could drop our stuff off, then we headed over to the conference center to get ready for my first class which was at 8.

ck1.jpg

Here we are at 7am all bright eyed and excited about being at CK!!

The class went really well – it was so great having Nicole there helping plus we had a couple helpers that were assigned to the room. After it ended we wandered through the vendor fair to do some shopping and then we headed to the mall! Woohoo!!! As tired as we both were, we had geared up enough energy to shop.

ck21.jpg
On our way to the mall – in our matching sunglasses which we got in Vegas (on a trip there for Memory Trends) last month!

However, the energy didn’t last all that long, plus we didn’t have much luck finding stuff we wanted. We stuck it out until mid afternoon then we headed back to the hotel, lay around and watched Oprah, then went back to the conference center for Nicole’s class which was at 5:30. Her class was great (Tilano Coaster class)- we had 3 helpers this time – and after it was over, the remaining kits were snatched up like hotcakes!!

We had so much fun during her class that we suddenly got a second wind – Time to shop again!! We went to a different mall this time and shopped until 9, realizing we hadn’t eaten yet, so next stop was the Cheesecake Factory. Not the greatest experience: waiting 40 minutes to get in, food not great (mine), also finding a huge hunk of cardboard mixed in with my broccoli pieces (just lovely), and having an arrogant server who screwed up our bills and made us wait an extra 25 minutes while he fixed it. We didn’t get back to the hotel until after 11pm and we were exhausted!!!

We got about 6 hours of sleep before the alarm and wake up call woke us. It was so hard to get up, and then we dragged ourselves back to the conference center. This was my largest class yet – I’m not even sure exactly how many people were there, between 40 and 50. I’m such a shy person too, I hate public speaking, but I didn’t have time really to think about it, so I wasn’t all that nervous -surprisingly! The class went really well – what fun people we had in all 3 of our classes this weekend!

After this last class, we headed back to the hotel, had breakfast and then I had to repack my suitcase twice to get everything to fit. We checked out and left for the airport, luckily we were early cause on the freeway WE RAN OUT OF GAS!!! Yes, completely. We were just about at the exit for the airport turnoff and suddenly Nicole was like “oh no…Jess…” and she looked really panicked. Immediately I thought we missed a turnoff or something (like we had yesterday – we were very good at getting lost!).

So Nicole exclaims “I think we’re out of gas!” and here we are going around a bend in the FREEWAY with a cement barrier on our left side and NO shoulder, nowhere to pull over. So the panic sets in and luckily we manage to roll far enough ahead to where a little bit of a shoulder appeared. We literally rolled into this and stopped. CRAP

We are sitting there kinda laughing a bit – a nervous laugh like “is this really happening??” but then we’re like “what are we going to do??”. Literally 2 seconds later a cop pulls up behind us and comes to my window (cause he’d get run over if he went to Nicole’s window – the lane of the freeway was RIGHT there). He called the DOT (Department of Transportation) to see if there was an Incident Response truck nearby and there was so he came within about 10 minutes. He took me to the nearest gas station to fill up his portable gas can, then we came back to the car and he put the gas in for us. What an awesome service this is – we don’t have this in Canada. It’s a government funded service – they have trucks that patrol the highways and freeways all day looking for stalls, accidents, debris on the roads, stuff like that. They push cars out of the lanes, give people gas if they run out, move stuff off the roads so people don’t hit it. Great service.

I hate to think about it if the car had died just 15 feet further back, we would have been in the middle of a lane in a curve & guaranteed we would have been hit.

The cop told us this was the 2nd WORSE spot in the entire state we could have run out of gas in. Yeah thanks buddy, make us feel even better why don’t you?

We did make it to the airport on time though! Then after spending all afternoon and most of the evening on airplanes, I arrived in Indianapolis, my first time here – it seems like quite a nice city. Best thing about it of course is that my sister and her family are here! It’s so good to see them, my nieces are so adorable!

Happy Halloween!

October 31, 2007 by Jess Leave a Comment

First of all, yes, I admit I am one of those crazy people who dresses their dogs up in costumes. Well what can I say, my dogs are my kids and they just look so darn cute. I actually hadn’t planned on dressing them up this year, but a few days ago during a quick trip to the mall with my friend Jodi and her daughter, I saw these adorable costumes in a children’s clothing store. They only had 2 left, one was a turtle and one was a skunk. Toddler sized and they were marked way down since it was so close to Halloween. I just could not help myself. I originally didn’t even think about using them as costumes for the dogs, I was thinking they were too cute to resist and I do want to have *human* kids one day. I suppose I have been bitten by the baby bug lately. I am going to be 30 next month, I still can’t believe it, so of course babies periodically get on my mind. (Mum, if you’re reading this, don’t get too excited just yet). But when I got them home and saw that they were perfect size for Angus and Zoey, I just had to try them on them. ADORABLE!!!! So they instantly became dog costumes.

So Halloween came and at 3:30 this afternoon we realized we hadn’t carved the pumpkins yet. I cleaned them all out and Brent carved the designs. Angus and Gracie (the cat) were so interested in this little pumpkin production line we had set up on the kitchen floor, that they didn’t leave our sides. Gracie tried to climb into the biggest pumpkin at one point – where at first we tried telling her “no” but then we thought ‘Perfect photo op – a BLACK cat in a pumpkin!’ so for the next few minutes we tried to convince her to go back in the pumpkin while we both had our cameras ready. No luck.

So this year I have seen white pumpkins all over the place, called Ghost Pumpkins. We found them at the market at the pumpkin patch when we went so we got one. Apparently white is the new orange, these are supposed to be the new “trendy” pumpkins. They look cool,  but I still like the orange ones.

Anyway we did go walking around the neighborhood for a bit with Jodi and her daughter Dasha while Dasha trick or treated – and yes, we took the dogs IN their costumes!!! Lol. They were not too impressed so we took the costumes off them after about 10 minutes. They did draw attention though and made a lot of people laugh (poor dogs). The funniest thing was that we came across another dressed up pooch and he was a skunk too!!! Hilarious

I haven’t dressed up for Halloween in years, in fact I’m pretty sure the last time was when I was 15 – my mum made me a french maid costume. It’s funny cause this picture was taken 14 years ago and I haven’t really changed that much.

The Pumpkin Patch

October 23, 2007 by Jess Leave a Comment

Today was such a gorgeous Fall day – days like these are my absolute favorite. For the past week we’ve been getting nothing but rain and more rain, but today the sun was out and the air was actually warm (yay!) . We took a break from work and took a trip to the pumpkin patch and then to the park so the dogs could run and play for awhile. They had a blast!

Always read labels….

October 10, 2007 by Jess Leave a Comment

I just want to send out a huge thank you to everyone who has submitted mini books to be considered for my book. I am blown away by all the talented people out there! It’s been a lot of fun looking at everyone’s galleries and blogs too.

I am really behind right now with emails and I promise I will write back to everyone who has submitted. The past few days have been really, well, not too fun. I have been out of town for almost a week visiting my mum. I packed up a whole lot of scrapping stuff and brought it all with me so I could get some work done without all the distractions of being in my own house. Unfortunetly I came down with a bad cold the day I got here and a couple days later it was at full peak and I was quite miserable. One of my contact lenses was bugging me so I took it out and put it in a dish of contact solution for the night. I forgot to bring my glasses with me, I also didn’t have a contact lense case. Just the solution that was left here previously. I neglected to read the labels on the bottle, even when there was bright red warnings on it. I was tired, I was sick, I learned a huge lesson the next morning when I went to put that contact back in. Ended up giving my eyeball an acid burn. Never before have I felt pain like I did when I put that contact in. So if you use Clear Care Solution, make sure you always use the lens case that comes with it, as it is the only one that neutralizes the solution, otherwise you are putting hydrogen peroxide and other chemicals right in your eye that can eat through your cornea. The white of my eye turned immediately bright red and it continued to burn all day, even when I rinsed it and rinsed it with water. It was so uncomfortable and I couldn’t see right since I have one contact in and one out. I finally gave in after dinner and let my mum take me to the hospital. They checked it out and put antibiotics in it which helped numb the pain, then they bandaged it all up and sent me home with tylenol 3’s telling me to take the pills and go to bed, and come back to the hospital in the morning so they can check the eye again. Basically to see if I was going to have any permanent damage. Wow, did I ever feel like an idiot. What a stupid thing to do. Back to the hospital the next morning and turns out it is already healing and I most likely will have no permanent damage. The rest of the day was terrible though cause I wasn’t allowed to put my contact back in that eye so my vision was all screwy. I was dizzy and nauseous all day. I couldn’t focus on anything. But today is much better, my eye feels great, I have both contacts in and can see again, so now I am back on the computer trying to catch up on everything. I did learn a big lesson though and I will not be taking my eyes for granted anymore.

October is here!

October 1, 2007 by Jess Leave a Comment

I really love October – the trees are changing colour, leaves are falling, pumpkin fields are looking more orange by the day. I just hope we get some lovely Fall days where the sun is shining, the air is crisp, and we can get out with the dogs for some long walks. So far, the start of Fall has not been so great over here, its been raining almost everyday for the past week.

When we left for Las Vegas it was technically still summer – the weather was still warm, we were still wearing shorts and tshirts, and we had to keep the windows open in the house to cool it down. We returned from Vegas a week later to find that Autumn had swept right in. Leaves were already covering the lawn around the house, there was a crispness to the air, and we had to turn the heat on in the house (after having it off since April). Welcome Fall.

A quick recap on Vegas: it was fun but its nice to be home. I miss the warm weather and the yummy food from the Bellagio. I don’t miss having to do so much walking each day – and the worst of it was that on our 2nd day there I pulled a ligament or something in my foot and it was incredibly painful to walk. I hobbled around for the rest of the week with a swollen foot. So much for shoe shopping like I planned, as I couldn’t even get my foot in any shoes! lol

Some of our favorite things about Vegas: The casinos at The Wynn and MGM; the cheesecake from Bellagio; Best food was at CraftSteak Restaurant, Bellagio Hotel and Spice Market @ Planet Hollywood. Entertainer Matt Newbold at Planet Hollywood. Warm weather. Shopping at the Fashion Show Mall and Forum Shops @ Caesars Palace. The shops at the Paris. Bellagio Fountains.

October is going to be a busy but exciting month . I’ve been busy working on my latest project as I have a deadline fast approaching, and also getting ready for some upcoming classes. This month I am teaching every Wednesday night at Precious Memories, and I’m also going to be teaching a couple classes at Canada’s Crop for Kids on Oct 12. One of the new classes I’ll be doing at PM is on Christmas Gift Tags. Something I really enjoy doing is personalizing gift tags for Christmas gifts. Something I say I will do each year and then I never have time to do it is making Christmas cards. This year I am really going to MAKE myself do it! Card making is something I just never have done a lot of, I love the idea of it, but just never really do it.

xmas-tags.jpg  These are some tags I made for fun – they are so easy to make. I used a lot of scraps, doodling, and I brought out some of my old punches.

xmastagsclass1.jpg the tags that we will make in my class – 2 of each design for a total of 30 tags.

Here’s a layout I did about a month ago:
